Arts Education Institute

South Dakotans for the Arts and the South Dakota Arts Council sponsor this summer, week-long institute for teachers held on the campus of Black Hills State University. The Institute provides training for teachers and administrators in developing local content standards and curriculum in K-12 visual arts, music and special education. In addition to the morning standards and curriculum courses, a wide variety of afternoon workshops in various disciplines are offered to participants. Two hours of college credit will be given to registrants through BHSU. Scholarships are available for participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please refer to the link below for current course and workshop information, as well as information regarding tuition, scholarships, housing and meal plans. View the current AEI brochure online. For more information, contact SoDA, 605-722-1467 or soda@dakotas.org.

Enrollment is limited, so don't delay.

High School Congressional Art Award

South Dakotans for the Arts and the South Dakota Arts Council partner with Representative Bill Janklow to participate in the High School Congressional Art Award. Each year, artwork by a South Dakota high school artist is included in the national exhibit in Washington, DC. A $200 cash award is provided by the Patricia Bawdon Endowment and the Arthur Holub Endowment.

Arts in the Classroom Teacher's Conference

This statewide workshop features courses in visual arts, music, drama and writing for classroom teachers and arts specialists. Specific courses to be announced. The conference emphasizes integrating the arts into the total curriculum and utilizing arts teaching techniques to engage children in the learning process. Credit is offered to teachers through Augustana College.

A+ School Program

South Dakotans for the Arts assists local school districts interested in becoming an A+ School offering an arts-based curriculum at the elementary level. Thirty four (34) sites in North Carolina serve as role models for this new program in South Dakota schools. A+ schools utilize multiple intelligences theories, integrated thematic units and daily instruction in the arts. SoDA and the South Dakota Arts Council have sponsored trips to NC schools for administrators and teachers from the Brandon Schools District, Sioux Falls School District and Howard School District. The Eugene Field Elementary School in Sioux Falls is South Dakota's first A+ Pilot School.

Oscar Howe Institute Scholarship

Two Native American students are awarded scholarships from South Dakotans for the Arts to attend the two-week Oscar Howe Art Institute at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

ArtsCorr

Designed at the request of former Governor William Janklow, ArtsCorr is a collaboration between South Dakotans for the Arts, the South Dakota Arts Council and the South Dakota Department of Corrections to integrate arts programs at the state's juvenile correctional facilities. ArtsCorr includes artist residencies and correctional staff training, as well as integration of the arts into chemical dependency programs, in-take assessments, and education.

Children's Theatre Company of South Dakota

SoDA and the SD Arts Council partner with the Black Hills Playhouse, Custer State Park, to create the SD Children's Theatre. FY2001 was the first year of touring for the company which consists of Dan and Deb Workman. The program is funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for which South Dakotans for the Arts is the fiscal agent. The Children's Theatre Company of South Dakota is on the South Daktoa Arts Council touring roster and schools can receive subsidy through that program. Contact the Children's Theatre Company by calling (605) 388-0506, ctcsd@dtgnet.com.

Children's Capitol Art Exhibit

South Dakotans for the Arts Day at the Legislature -- a biennial event sponsored by SoDA with support from the SDAC -- is one of the premiere public awareness campaigns for arts education. In 2002, the Children's Capitol Art Day Planner, co-sponsored by First Western Bank of the Black Hills and presenting student artwork from every legislative district, was presented to the Governor and each legislator. Legislators surrounded the Rotunda balcony and sat on the grand staircase as Maestro Susan Haig led the South Dakota Symphony in one of its first appearances as the newly-formed Chamber Orchestra.
